Just about everyone thinks of hummingbirds as the bright colored ruby throated ones that seem to always catch our eye when they light on the nearest feeder. But, the more we look at them, the more captivating they tend to be! I remember the first time I saw the big “swooping” mating dance outside my front porch. Fascinating!
Out west, I used to see a very aggressive little fellow that I always called the “bully” of the hummers – the rufous. He was a little golden-ish colored bird, and I remember thinking, “How can something so little and cute be so darned mean?” But I’ve come to discover that hummers in general can be mean to one another and quite territorial!
I’ll close this with a video showing you what I mean! Come back soon!
